The best deep fryer champions battle it out

The 2005 version of the event broke new ground in fried food competitions: some of the best chefs in the country came together to compete for one of the two major awards in the competition: The Best Taste Award and the Most Creative Award. The first ever Best Taste Award went to the now-common Fried Peanut Butter, Jelly, and Banana Sandwich. In the years since, creative dishes like fried Coke, fried beer, and fried bubblegum have taken home honors. Other famous entries included the fried macaroni and cheese seen below.

The 2017 Big Tex Choice Awards hosted the most competitive field of deep-fried aficionados to date. A number of dishes stood out among the crowd of hungry fans. The Tamale Donut was a savory take on a familiar sweet treat. The Fried Texas Sheet Cake also got a big response among the fans of sweet treats despite not making it to the finals. Deep Fried Chicken Noodle Soup on a Stick also made it to the savory finals. In the sweet bracket, Deep Fried Fruit Loops were a big hit with kids and adults alike. While the breakfast cereal entry made it to the finals, it wasn’t successful in taking the crown.

That honor went to the winner of the Best Taste-Sweet award: a curious concoction known as the Gulf Coast Fish Bowl. The big winner of the event was the winner of both the Best Taste – Savory Award and the Most Creative Award: the Funnel Cake Bacon Queso Burger.
