Butterball Turkey Fryer Review

This fryer has two sizes. We have the large electric turkey fryer that can hold a turkey weighing 14 pounds and the XL turkey fryer that can cook a turkey weighing 20 pounds. Both sizes can be used indoors.

Compared to other outdoor fryers, you would get to save around 3 gallons of oil when using the Butterball Indoor Fryer. If you’ll be using around 5 gallons of oil for other fryers, you would only need 2 gallons for the Butterball.

Butterball Indoor Electric Turkey Fryer Features

Splash Proof

The one-piece lid of this stainless steel fryer ensures that no oil is splashed from its porcelain coated inner pot. With its lid closed, heat is retained inside the fryer and there is minimal oil splatter to prevent burns or accidents from the hot oil.

This fryer also has a filter built in to it so the moisture is minimal. As an added safety precaution, this fryer has an indicator mark for maximum oil level to avoid boil overs.

The XL fryer needs around 2.75 gallons or 11qts of cooking oil while the large fryer needs 2 gallons cooking oil. We recommend peanut oil with its mild flavor and high smoke point. You would need to wait for 35 to 45 minutes for the oil to reach 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

Control Panel

The control panel (analog type) of this fryer is connected to its heating element. It is also removable from its main body.

It has a dial that you can turn for temperature setting. Its ready light will illuminate when your desired temperature (365 degrees Fahrenheit for turkey) is reached. Time to cook that turkey.

For timer setting, you just push the button to set your desired time before releasing it to start the timer.

Extra Safety Features

What we like best about this fryer is its temperature control that can steadily maintain 375 degrees Fahrenheit. It has an indicator light that lights up when the oil reaches the temperature you’ve set.

Its auto shut off feature ensures that when your fryer gets too hot, it would automatically shut down. This is to prevent the oil from boiling over and avoid house fires from breaking out.

Reset your butterball fryer by inserting a toothpick or pin into the small hole inside the fryer’s control panel. Remember to unplug the fryer before doing it. Temperature for boiling or steaming is 210 degrees Fahrenheit. Take note that the indicator will not light up when using water. You just need to wait for your water to boil.

The timer lets you do other things without worrying about your turkey being overcooked.

It also has a breakaway magnetic cord that would disconnect from the main body if pulled. This is to prevent the fryer from toppling over and possibly burn you when you accidentally pull on the cord.

Cooking Basket

The aluminium cooking basket of the XL fryer can hold a turkey weighing 20 lbs. It can also cook a boil of large seafood or up to 5 lbs. of wings or legs of chicken.

The cooking wire basket of the large fryer is chrome coated and can cook a turkey weighing 14 lbs or a boil of large seafood or up to 3 lbs of wings or legs of chicken.

The basket has a drain clip (patented) fitted on it. When the turkey is cooked, you can hang the cooking basket onto the mounting hole (located on the body’s top rim) to cool and drain the excess oil.

The fryer also comes with a basket lifting hook that is made of stainless steel. This is a free accessory that would ensure that you are able to lower and lift your turkey from the boiling oil safely.

Cooking Time

A turkey weighing around 14 lbs will be ready in about 50 minutes to an hour. The butterball fryer cooks one pound in 3.5 to 4 minutes.

Cleaning Up

Butterball fryer’s removable parts like the cooking basket, lid, pot and drain valve are all dishwasher safe. A valve spout is attached to the drain valve so you can easily remove the oil from the inner pot and clean it. Even the one-piece lid is removable so you can clean it with ease.
